Definition

What Is Instructional Design?

Instructional design is the systematic practice of creating learning experiences that reliably change knowledge, skill or behaviour. It applies learning science — cognitive load theory, dual coding, retrieval and spaced practice, worked examples and feedback timing — through structured models such as ADDIE, SAM and backward design.

A mediocre course on an excellent LMS is still a mediocre course. Instructional design is where the learning is won or lost — so we start from the behaviour you need and design backwards to the content.

Why Graveiens

Why Teams Choose Our Designers

Learning Scientists, Not Slide Builders

Designs grounded in cognitive science and paired with SMEs — outcomes first, media last.

Design Through to Evaluation

We own the whole chain from needs analysis to measured behaviour change, across every sector.

AI-Accelerated Prototyping

GenAI speeds storyboards and drafts; experts verify pedagogy and accuracy at every gate.

Honest About What Works

We measure behaviour change, not completions — and will tell you when training is the wrong fix.

Our Work Process

Our Instructional Design Process

  1. 1

    Discovery & Needs Analysis

We diagnose the performance gap and define what success actually looks like.

  2. 2

    Learning Objectives

Observable, measurable objectives, each traced to a business or performance goal.

  3. 3

    Learning Architecture

Curriculum map and sequence built on the model that fits your timeline and risk.

  4. 4

    Storyboard & Prototype

Storyboards and a clickable prototype validate the experience before production.

  5. 5

    Assessment & Evaluation Plan

Aligned assessment plus a Kirkpatrick/Phillips evaluation framework with xAPI.

  6. 6

    Handoff or Build

We hand a production-ready design pack to your team — or build it end to end.

How We Compare

Design That Changes Behaviour

Where template shops stop at "looks done," we measure whether learning actually transferred.

Healthcare · Instructional Design

A medical certification learners actually finish

Challenge. A US healthcare provider had a 24-course certification stuck at 41% completion — clinically accurate but pedagogically flat, with long text modules and end-only exams.

What we did. We rebuilt it as 10–15 minute microlearning mapped to a competency framework, with case-based simulations, spaced knowledge checks with instant remediation and a visual progress system — validated by clinical SMEs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Instructional design is the systematic practice of creating learning experiences that reliably change knowledge, skill or behaviour. It applies learning science — cognitive load theory, retrieval and spaced practice, feedback — through structured models such as ADDIE and SAM.

Learning needs analysis, objectives, curriculum mapping, storyboards, prototypes, assessment strategy and an evaluation framework — everything from diagnosis to measurable outcomes, not just slide production.

Consulting typically runs $75–$200 per hour, and full storyboard-to-design work $3,000–$10,000 per finished hour of course, depending on interactivity and assessment depth. You get a fixed scope after a discovery call.

Both. We run an ADDIE/SAM hybrid — ADDIE for structure and sign-off, SAM for rapid prototyping and iteration — and pick the balance that fits your timeline and risk.

Yes. SMEs guarantee accuracy; instructional designers turn expertise into learning that transfers. The most valuable thing a designer does is sometimes decline the brief — when the real problem is not a training problem.

We design evaluation in from the start using Kirkpatrick/Phillips levels and xAPI data, so you measure behaviour change and impact — not just completion rates, which track compliance rather than learning.

Yes. We write observable, measurable objectives and trace each one back to a business or performance goal, so every screen in the course earns its place.
